Governor Pence and the Road to Discrimination

Hey guys!

Long time, no blog. I've been doing a lot of stuff recently. And by a lot of stuff I mean I've been stressing out and being absolutely lit pissed over things out of my control.

And one of those things is this whole RFRA (Religious Freedom Restoration Act) going on in Indiana.

Confession time:
I live in Indiana.

Its a terrible law. Its a terrible thing. There is no actual FREEDOM in this law. None. The writing is so ambiguous that you can pretty much claim Religious freedom to do anything. Technically the laws can't touch you.

Its already being used to defend against child abuse and spousal abuse charges in other states... Just fyi.

And no matter what Governor Dip-Shit (I mean, Pence) says, this was designed to enable Government Approved Discrimination. You know why?

He said that the LGBTQIA community being classified as a protected class of citizen wasn't even ON his priority list. Why? Because he is a bigot.

On Saturday I went (along with at least 3,000 other Hoosiers) to Indianapolis to protest and rally against the signing of this into Law. It was signed into law on Thursday last week.

This is reality, kiddos. This is happening. Its 2015 and the Civil Rights Movement has pretty much been trashed by a law signed IN PRIVATE (because he knew the outrage and then has the AUDACITY to say he didn't know this would negatively impact the state!) by a Bigot.

Welcome to Fucking Indiana.

I live here and I am wanting to #BoycottIndiana.

So, here's what I want you to do:
If you live in Indiana, please use your right to VOTE! This is how these things happen guys. People don't use their VOICES and they get drowned out.

Your vote DOES matter!
It DOES make a difference!
And if you aren't voting, shitty things like this happen. We didn't have enough people who voted (especially in my area) and this asshat got elected. Along with several other people in his party who specifically wrote this bill so that they could push their ANTI-GAY agenda on the state.

Not only that, but please only visit businesses that serve EVERYONE! This is another way to fight back. Don't purchase, endorse or help out businesses that refuse service based on "religious belief."

I am so ashamed to be living in a state that has legalized Bigotry. Seriously, this is fucking pathetic guys.

America was built on Religious FREEDOM for ALL. Not just a few. EVERYONE is supposed to be fucking free under that banner.

We are all created EQUAL.

And if you have to boost your ego/religious beliefs by being shitty and denying equality to someone else, then you are failing at religion.

If there is a God, I hope he isn't anything like the people that fucking follow him.

The Hoosier State

Today (June 25th, 2014) a Judge struck down the marriage ban in Indiana freeing hundreds of couples to marry whomever they choose, regardless of gender or sexual preferences!

This is a glorious day for all Hoosiers!

Love is Love!

It could happen to you.

Many of you, I'm sure, are wondering why I keep "harping" on the topic of Equal rights for Homosexuals, Bisexuals, Transgenders and Heterosexuals. The reason for this is because it is very close to my heart. Not just because I'm bisexual.

I come from a family where Homosexuality is actually a statistic. 1 in 3 children on my mother's side of the family is homosexual. I've grown up surrounded by people who were homosexual and you know they are the most loving and wonderful people I've ever met!

I had a homosexual great-uncle on my Grandpa's side (my mother's father), who sadly passed away before I got the chance to really know him. He worked in radio, he had been in the army. He loved Audrey Hepburn. And he had a wonderful partner. I have pictures of them and myself when I was a baby.

I had a great-aunt who was a lesbian on my Grandmother's side (my mom's mom), who also passed away, very recently. She was in the air force when she was young. She was a wild child who loved her family very much. She was a funny dancer and had a great sense of humor. I have pictures of her and Hannah (when Hannah was two or so) dancing at a cousin's wedding.

I have another great-aunt who is a lesbian (on my Grandmother's side). She has been with her partner for longer than I have been alive. They have always been there for one another and, though they are conservative in their public displays of affection, anyone who has been around them for very long can tell that they love each other. That they have always loved each other. I have pictures of us playing together, along with me crawling into their dog, Posha's house.

And lastly, I have another great-uncle (also on my Grandmother's side). He is funny and wears some inappropriate "Gumby" t-shirts. He took care of Becky, his sister, right up until the end. He and the rest of my family have always worked together, no matter the disagreements, no matter the disputes. Because we are a family!

We are not any less just because we happen to love someone of the same sex. We do not deserve to fight and die for a country that refuses to give us the same rights! We deserve to get married and have spousal rights and be in love with who we want to be in love with.

Which brings me to why I am talking about this today.

And what I found made me want to cry and made me feel sick and made me angry. It also made me think and it made me wonder.

I have been surrounded by homosexuality my whole life. I have family that I love dearly (even though we don't get to see each other as much as we would like) who are homosexual or bisexual. I have so many friends that I couldn't possibly live without who are homosexual or bisexual. What happens if they are in a committed relationship and something happens? What happens to them because they have no legal rights? What happens?

This is a very powerful story, and very sad. You may disagree with what someone chooses to do with their life, but it is THEIR life, not yours. And they deserve the same rights and freedoms you have.

So I am asking you, please, if you have ever loved someone who was Homosexual, Bisexual, Transgendered OR even Heterosexual (because this is a story that affects us all) watch (and re-watch) those videos and then make the decision of whether you are willing to help out.
 
For those of you who are wondering, yes, I did pledge some money as a backer. I wouldn't ask anyone to pledge money to a cause I, myself, had not pledged something to. I didn't pledge much, because I am poor, but what I gave was from the heart and that is all that matters in the end.
 
I want to see this film in the fall, and if we raise enough awareness that can be a reality.

I want to see my family and friends happily married even though they love someone of the same gender. Even though they love someone of a different color. Even though they love someone of a different religion. Love is love.

It Happened in Indiana

This poem is based on the horrible things that happened to a young woman named Sylvia Likens. She was brutally tortured and abused, and murdered. That was in 1965.

She was 16.

I don't know if it helps at all, but I can't help but believe that this young woman deserves to be remembered. Especially on this day, the day she died in 1965.

It Happened in Indiana
"I'm a prostitute and proud of it!" scrawled in burning letters across her skin,
bruises forming blue and purple spiders that can't scatter away from the light.
Tied to a filthy bed, naked and dying, she can't even avoid soiling herself.
"You can't ever get married... You can't ever undress in front of others..." the
words filter through the unending pain and the torturous days and nights.

The stench of urine and feces permeates her dreaming, the taste of shit in her
mouth makes her gag. Why do they hate her so? What did she ever do to
deserve this abuse? She is shaking, so hungry for real food, hungry for gentility,
hungry for escape. Could she run? Could she escape? Could she convince
someone to help her? She is terrified, because she hears them coming, like
thousands of venomous snakes tasting her fear, eager for her blood, for her pain.

She is swollen, bruised by the forced violations. She is naked again, their leering
eyes dancing over her skin, over the burns and wounds. They are laughing at her,
laughing as her abuser forces her to push the bottle further up. What will happen
next? More scalding baths? More salt in the wounds that they inflict? Or will it be
another forced tattoo?

Is this to be her fate, to die on this filthy mattress, locked in a cellar, in the dark?
She cries, cries for an imagined baby and a mutilated body, for burns and bruises,
for her sister and for herself. Forced into a tub full of scalding water, salt
viciously rubbed into the burns, skin falling off. Her bones jut out at odd angles,
the result of malnutrition. Welts from the belt rise to the surface, eager to show
themselves for what they are.

A 16 year old girl; tortured, submitted to a sexless sex crime and other horrors,
lies dead on a soiled mattress in the dark. The words "I'm a prostitute and proud
of it!" burned into her stomach, a 3 scarred into her chest. Bruises like blue and
purple spiders scattered across her pale flesh, naked and eyes fixed on oblivion.
Her name? Does she even have one? Or is she just a dead girl from Indiana?

PFC Brett Wood

Spencer, Indiana, has been in the news recently with their show of patriotism for one of their own, PFC Brett Wood, who was killed recently while overseas. The entire town lined the streets as PFC Wood's was brought home.

His memorial was held in the gymnasium of Owen Valley High School, from which he graduated just last year. His body was later cremated, per his request, and returned to his family.

He was 19.

The Teahouse

While I was in Maryland/DC, L.E.D and I went to this place called "Reynolds Tavern" which also happens to be a teahouse. It is not only a really cool historical building, on the circle, but it also has some very interesting and slightly old fashioned things.

We decided on the Afternoon Tea Special for both of us. This included a bottomless pot of tea and various snacks that varied depending on what type of special you picked. We picked the Sweet Tea and Savory Tea.

The Sweet tea came with a pot of Sencha Kyoto Cherry Rose Festival, which is a sweeter tea that we chose based solely on its name. It turned out to be a great choice! It also came with small sweets: a lemon square, a piece of caramel pound cake, a piece of plain pound cake, a heart shaped sugar cookie, a heart shaped lavender infused sugar cookie, two different tarts (which I can't remember the names of) and a scone of our choice. We both picked a cranberry orange scone, which was heaven with fresh whipped cream and strawberry preserves.

The Savory tea came with a pot of Lapsong Souchong, which was suggested to us by our waitress. Lapsong Souchong is a very strange tea, partially because it has a very smoky flavor. To be honest it smelled (and slightly tasted) like bacon. Donnie would've approved. It also came with small savory treats: a Shepard's pie tart, a mushroom truffle tart, two ham finger sandwiches, two egg salad finger sandwiches, two cucumber and cream cheese finger sandwiches and a few other things I can't quite remember.

The restaurant played 40's and 50's music, which was very nice. Including some songs from my favorite musicals. One of the many songs we heard was about Indiana, which made us giggle since we had driven from Indiana to get to Maryland.

There were a lot of interesting things about this place. It was very old-fashioned, which made me happy as I like historical and old-fashioned things. We had honey (with a fancy honey dipper) and actual sugar cubes with our tea. And yes, I did say "One lump or two?" while holding a cube of sugar in some gorgeous little sugar tongs. Our cups were Wedgewood China cups and our tiny tea spoons had little tea cups and tea pots on the ends.

It was definitely worth the visit and I can't wait to go there again. The only thing that we didn't get to try was their "Love Potion #9" which was an alcoholic beverage we decided to save for another trip.

Escaping Reality

Here is another great IU student film produced by my friend Nick and starring my friends Phil and Eric. I really love the fuzziness of the film (you'll understand what I mean when you watch it) transition into the clearness of reality.

I think it is also a great depicition of Alcoholism and the effects of attempting to avoid reality, but I think you will understand it better when you watch it. Enjoy!

September's Children

September's Children is the name currently given to several young men who committed suicide last September because of anti-gay bullying.

The youngest of these was Seth Walsh, 13. He was bullied relentlessly by fellow students who continously called him a fag, a queer, a homo. He tried to commit suicide by hanging in his backyard. The attempt was unsuccessful and he was discovered. However, enough damage had been done that he lived just 9 days on life support, before finally passing away.

Another was Tyler Clementi, 18. He jumped from the George Washington Bridge after his roommate and another "hallmate" at his school released two videos of him in sexual encounters with other men. His body was found a week later.

Billy Lucas, 15, also committed suicide because of anti-gay bullying at his school. He hung himself in his family's barn in Indiana. He had been told that he was nothing and that he should just kill himself.

There are many, too many, young men and women who have been lost to us because they were Homosexual or Bisexual or Transgendered and were bullied. Or bashed. Not all of them have been lost to suicide. Some have been lost to murder or have simply disappeared.

How many children and young adults must turn to suicide before something is done to help? How many of our future leaders, doctors, scientists, actors and liberators have to die before their time for us to realize that we have a real problem?

And who is teaching our children to hate? Who is showing them that violence is the right thing to do? Adults who have no respect for life, who are prejudiced and full of venom. Adults who claim that homosexuals who get married is what will destroy the constitution of marriage. And those same adults who say that are marrying and divorcing and fucking around with people that they aren't married to. But somehow, homosexuality is going to destroy the institution of marriage! Christians, like Pat Robertson, who speak for intolerance and practically preach murder when they speak of homosexuality.

How are they supposed to learn any different? Hate is taught. Hate is learned. We do not come into this world with hate, though we leave this world with it raging through our veins.

In honor of all those who have died during the struggle to be counted as equals.

A Cherry Red Lipstick Kiss

This is a short film written and directed by a friend of mine who goes to school at Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana. I know I am a little biased, because he is my friend, but this video is truly one of the best student made short films I've ever seen! And I am so happy to present it you today!

It is an interesting twist on the abusive relationship and how far is too far. Often we don't think about abusive relationships in shades of gray. We think of them in black and white, they are wrong. Plain and simple. But Elijah takes things to a whole new level, twisting what is usually so clear into something not so clear.

Freedom isn't Free

Rosa Parks



Rosa Parks has often been credited as being the spark that lit the fire of the Civil Rights Movement. With one simple act of defiance, the unknown seamstress in Montgomery, Alabama, became the Statue of Liberty for an entire race.



Some Interesting Facts
* Rosa Parks appeared in an episode of "Touched By An Angel" in 1999. It was her last television appearance.

* She received the Presidential Medal of Freedom, presented by President Clinton in 1996.

* In 1999 a lawsuit was filed (on Rosa Parks' behalf) against the group OutKast for using her name without permission in their song "Rosa Parks".

* In 1994 Parks was assaulted in her home by a young man by the name of Joseph Skipper, who robbed her and struck her in the face.

* She received the Congressional Gold Medal, which was pushed through by Julia Carson, the senator for Indiana.

* Parks is most famous for refusing to give up her seat on a Montgomery bus to a white man. She was removed from the bus and arrested, sparking the Montgomery Bus Boycott.

* Invented a method for straightening "kinky" hair in 1905.

* She is listed in the Guinness World Book of Records as being the first woman to become a millionaire by her own work.

* In 1910 Walker moved to Indianapolis, Indiana, where she built a factory and established her headquarters.

* Made the largest contribution to saving Frederick Douglass' house in Washington D.C.
