The Bechdel Test and Manhood.

I always find it so encouraging when Men stand up for the fight against Patriarchy and Rape Culture. It isn't that we need male saviours, it is that we need friends who are willing to back us up in any situation.

I also love that he talked about one of my favorite movies "The Wizard of Oz." (Which passes the Bechdel Test, fyi.)

It is SO empowering to know that you are not standing alone, but that you are standing with other people who know and understand and WANT to help.

I love this.

Dear Mr. President

August 01st, 2012

Dear Mr. President,

It's a funny (as in weird) time right now, don't you think? All this insanity with your upcoming election (I am confident in your abilities as you can see) and the world is all a stage (as Shakespeare once said) set with chessmen. In the end it's kind of like that, a political checkmate with more than a chessboard at stake. Of course chess players don't usually play for keeps.

Mr. President, I am going to be honest, I'm not sure why I am writing you. My previous letter (before I was married I sent you a glittery Paris themed card) had a point. I wanted to tell you how much I supported you. I still support you (and not just because you were the first president I got to vote for). But this wasn't really going to be about that.

We're moving, not just as a country. Moving towards something ill-defined and frightening. I'm afraid, sir. Afraid that we're moving not for the better. We (the collective "we") have grown so lazy, prejudiced, paranoid and irrational. I feel like I'm trapped in the collective body of a rabid dog. I resist, but get pulled in again. It seems insane because it is.

Frankly, Mr. President, I could care less about your religious beliefs. The constitution (last I checked) said nothing about religion. I care that you have morals; compassion, honesty, etc. I don't care if you were born overseas or not (not that I believe you were, but I hear this ALL the time at work) because you were born to American citizens so it wouldn't matter anyway.

What I care about is you visiting the Colorado victims. I care about you paying the same amount of taxes I do. I care about you donating your Nobel Peace prize money. I care about you fighting for equal pay for equal work.

I care about you standing up for GLBTQ rights. I care about those things, Mr. President. I don't care if you worship Buddha or Krishna or Zeus for that matter. I do care if you use your power for good rather than "evil." Be Luke not Vader (well at the beginning Vader, you can be Vader overthrowing the Emperor. Huh, the Emperor could be Romney or big business and you could be Vader throwing them over the railing... Somehow I don't think I'll be getting a job creating your ads any time soon).

I'm sorry I ramble so, Mr. President.

I'm sorry I don't have more money. I want to donate. I want to have a chance to have dinner with you. I want to be more than one voice, but it's very hard being an adult, don't you agree?

I want so many things! I want my freedom. I want my health. I want my liberty and to pursue my happiness. I want to be a part of this so-called "Great Nation."

In truth, I just want to be happy. I want more than what I've been told I should want.

I hope I haven't bored you to tears, sir. I hope you and yours are doing well. I hope you continue the good fight, even if letters from supporters stop coming. Even if it looks bleak. There are people, like me, who can't afford Mr. Romney, sir. Especially those who think he is a good option.

Please beat him. Please continue to be the kind and wonderful human being you are. And please say a prayer (if you believe in that, I don't really anymore) for me.

In all sincerity and with great respect,
Sarai Smith

All of Her: Chapter Twenty

Chapter Twenty

About a week after the cute Asian guy and the coffee confessions, I wake up in a cold sweat realizing who that cute guy was. Wasn't his name Jae or something like that? I know it was monosyllabic, I think. He was the one who rescued me from that brute with the bad pick-up lines, the one I vaguely remember dancing with my first time at "Alice's Wonderland." How could I not recognize him? I must have been drunker than I thought I was.

Suddenly I have to go out. I am itching to go to "Alice's Wonderland" and see if he is there. Of course he wouldn't be, this time of day. I have too many things to do today anyway. Like, sit around the house and do nothing. Okay, who am I kidding? I have nothing to really do today. I'll call my boss at "The Wilde" and see if she needs anyone to pick up a shift today. Its not like I have anything else pressing to do. Or any other work that needs done.

If she won't let me work, I could always visit my mother or my sisters. I could even, heaven forbid, call up my brother and see what he is doing. Maybe hang out with Noah or Clark. Do something! Anything, really. I just need out of the house for a little while. I just have to waste enough time so that I can try to "accidentally" bump into Jae or whatever his name was at the bar.

Luckily for me, my boss calls, before I do, asking if I can take a five hour shift. Apparently one of my co-workers had to bail. Good for me, though. I don't even hesitate in my answer. I throw on some suitable "work" clothes, slip into a pair of flip-flops and kiss my cat goodbye. He stands on the counter and meows at me as I close the door.

I don't rush to work, but I don't exactly drive like I'm behind a herd of turtles either.

Once I am settled behind the counter, and boiling water for tea; I begin to think of something I could do after this to kill time. I go through a small list of possibilities. The first being actually paying attention to my cat. The second being visiting my family. My excuse to kill a little more time arrives in the form of a petite young woman with gorgeously hued honey-blonde hair. Not that I actually see her when she comes in. I'm too busy pondering my visit to the bar tonight and an open book in my lap.

"Excuse me, do you happen to have 'Tiger, Tiger' by Margaux Fragoso?" says a soft and lilting voice. I look up, startled from my reading, into her iridescent eyes. They shift subtly from blue-green to emerald to cobalt. For a moment I am mesmerized and she gently repeats the question.

"Fragoso, you say? I think I've seen that name before." I come out from behind the counter and escort the young lady over to the letter F section. After a moment of book shuffling, I discover what I believe to be the volume she is looking for. "Is this what you were looking for?"

She smiles timidly and accepts the book from my hands. I note a sadness to her features as she looks over the cover and skims through a few pages. I wonder if she has read this book before and that is why she seems so sad. We don't move for a few moments, she seems lost in a dream and I don't know what to say.

"This book is about child abuse, did you know?" she asks, holding the book like a shield over her heart.

"I did not." I say, honestly. My realm of literature does not usual tread such grounds. "Is that why you seem so forlorn?"

She shrugs. A careless gesture made lovely by her. My attraction to this girl is fairly overwhelming at this point. It feels odd to me. I haven't felt such a strong attraction to a woman since I was with Jahan. If I was a braver woman I would kiss her now, kiss away the sadness I can feel seeping out of her bones. But I am not that brave. After a few more moments of awkwardness she smiles and motions for me to lead her to the counter.

"It comes to ten dollars and thirty-five cents, miss." I say, ringing up the total and placing her purchase in a re-usable cloth bag. She nods and counts out her money to the cent before pushing it toward me. I re-count it, if only to keep her a little longer. She doesn't seem to mind and, once I have handed her the bag and her receipt, she lingers.

"Your water is boiling." she says, simply.

"Oh shit! I forgot all about it." I run to turn off the kettle, which has started shrieking. Once I have poured a steaming cup of tea and re-situated myself on my stool, I notice that she hasn't moved at all. Instead she is staring at me, intently.

"Do you believe in fate?" she asks, quietly.

"I suppose I believe in some modicum of fate. Why do you ask?" I pour another cup of tea and gently push it toward her.

"No reason, I suppose. Just romantic fancy on my part. I'm Annabelle." she reaches out a very pale hand and I take it in a handshake.

"I'm Abra," I say. "would you like to pull up a seat? Have some tea with me? Its a rather slow day."

"I'd love to." She smiles, another slightly sad smile, and I pull up another stool for her to sit on.

We don't discuss the book she purchased. We don't discuss tea or books at all. Instead, she quietly sips her tea and watches me intently. Under all the attention, I blush. I am too embarrassed to even try flirting with her. It all seems very strange; she buys a book about child abuse and stares at me. She asks me questions about fate, yet, once she has an opportunity to ask any question she wants, she is silent.

"So, what made you choose that particular book?" I ask, nodding toward the brown cloth bag in her lap. At first she just stares at it, as though it has suddenly grown tentacles or something equally disturbing.

"It was on a list of disturbing books. I couldn't resist." She looks up at me, sips at her tea and then shrugs.

"You enjoy disturbing literature?" I ask, slightly baffled.

"I'd rather not discuss it." she says, suddenly. "I'd much rather discuss where it is that you would like to get dinner tonight. With me."

I am even more baffled. She has, up to this point, seemed to be very shy and quiet. Suddenly she is presuming that I am going to go to dinner with her. Which, I am, but that is beside the point.

"Excuse me?" I say, allowing some of my confusion to bleed through.

"I suppose I should ask, rather than tell." she says. "Would you like to go out to dinner with me?"

Quite suddenly I experience a blanking of my mind. All thoughts of going to the bar tonight, all thoughts of Jae or whatever his name was, vanish. She is suddenly all I can think about. I smile, a lopsided grin with no brain behind it at all. She responds with an equally lopsided grin and stands up. She reaches into her pocket for a stray piece of paper and grabs a stray pen off of the counter. She writes down her number, a place and a time. She even signs her name in a flourish, in the corner of the paper. She winks at me, takes her book and just like that she is gone.

The paper says Viperia Tearoom, ten-thirty.

I float through the rest of my work, dreamily wondering how I got a beautiful girl to ask me out with no real effort. As I lock up I think about the delicious things I'd like to do to her and wondering if this is what she meant by fate. At home I layer a burnt orange lace panel top over a creamy colored tank top, matching the lace paneling. I slip into a pair of black skinny jeans and raid my shoe cupboard for a pretty pair of flats. I eventually settle for a pair of burnt orange heels with a slight ruffle and an ankle strap. I take a long look at myself in the mirror and realize I've become a lot more interested in dressing up since David.

I wonder, briefly, if this because I am trying to attract attention now. And, just as briefly, I worry about this. I note a few dark circles under my eyes and pass it off as allergies, even though I know that isn't it. I confessed everything to Noah so that I would stop this behaviour. So that I might come back to the light side of the Force. Instead I seem to have confessed only to revert back to the darkness of this downward spiral. And, admittedly, I kind of enjoy the spiral. In a sick, twisted way, I really enjoy all this self-inflicted pain and torture. I feel like I deserve it, so may as well enjoy it, right?

I realize this type of thinking is extremely unhealthy, but I choose to ignore it and finish getting ready for my date. I fill up Snuggles' water and food bowls, rest my butt against my ankles while I pet him, lovingly. I then head out again, despite more protesting meows from him.

I arrive at the Viperia Tearoom at a quarter after ten. I am pleased to discover that Annabelle is already there. She waves me over to her table, stands and hugs me before we sit down. I, stealthily, take note of how beautiful she looks in her sleek turquoise mini dress with cross-back straps and her white leggings. She smiles and signals the waitress over. She orders a Thai Quinoa Salad, whatever that may be, and a peach martini. I order potato blossom dumplings, French fried green beans and a cherry-rose tea margarita. She laughs at my food choices, but doesn't say anything else.

I begin to get very nervous as we say nothing. Absolute silence. I don't know where to start, what topic to discuss, what to say? I smile, awkwardly, but she doesn't seem to notice. Just as I feel like I might be brave enough to pick a topic our food arrives and immediately begin to eat. Contended munching at least, temporarily, replaces the awful silence. Instead of focusing, I let my mind wander to what it would be like to be in bed with Annabelle. I imagine several interesting fantasies, before settling on a particularly steamy one.

"What are you thinking about?" asks Annabelle. I nearly jump out of my skin, startled by the sudden break in silence and a little bit of shame for what I was thinking. She looks at me curiously and I have the horrible feeling that she has been watching me the entire time. I gulp, guiltily.

"Nothing particularly interesting." I say, trying to laugh off these feelings. "You?"

"I was thinking about what you would be like in bed." she says, laughing. "Weren't you thinking the same thing? I can tell from your blushing that you were."

"I... Well, I mean... I would... Yes." I stammer. "I suppose I am rather transparent."

"Its only natural you know, we're sexually active young women and obviously mutually attracted to one another or we wouldn't be here. Why not think about it?" She says this all so calmly, more like it was scientific fact.

"Is this what you meant by fate? The attraction?" I ask, mulling over the oddness of the conversation.

"Partly. Partly because I feel as though we are meant to be together, at least for a time. You do find me attractive, don't you?"

"Of course I do!" I exclaim, dropping my fork with a bit of a clatter. I smile apologetically and carefully pick it back up. "Yes, I do. I find you quite attractive."

"In that case, let's call it fate for now and skip dessert. We can go back to my place, if you like. Its just a block or so away from here."

I bite my lip, trying not to acquiesce too quickly, but I find that I am already nodding in agreement. She laughs again, a melodic sound, and I find I am laughing too. We hold each other's hands as we head toward my car. When we get to the car, I find that I can't resist any longer and I press her to my car, kissing her as passionately as I have ever kissed anyone. I hold her hands, our fingers entwined, just like fate. Our fingers fit so perfectly together, our lips feel so right and our bodies pressed against my car feels like perfection.

While we kiss, a thought occurs to me. I could fall in love with this girl. Its so crazy, so insane. I pull away from her a moment, her lips glistening and slightly swollen from my kisses. I feel the breath escape my lungs. I just met this girl and I'm already thinking about breaking my rule of not falling in love. She has me so mixed up in this "fate" business that I'm actually beginning to believe it. What kind of girl is she?

Before I can take another breath she pulls my face back to hers. We kiss slowly, painfully slow. We kiss until neither one of us can breathe. I open the passenger side door and help her get in. We drive the block and a half to her apartment slowly, still holding hands. Maybe this instant attraction is fate. Could this be love at first sight? I try to shake the thought from my head. I thought David was my love at first sight too. I glance at our entwined fingers and feel a whimsical smile creep around the corners of my mouth.

She leads me upstairs to her apartment. She opens the door slowly and ushers me inside. The inside of her apartment smells sweet, with a tinge of bitterness. I wonder, for a moment, if this is a sign. But then I remember that I no longer believe in signs or metaphors or anything like that. I try to remind myself that I also no longer believe in fate, but I am quickly losing that battle. She has the windows draped with light cancelling curtains, so for a moment all I can sense is her beside me and the sweet smell of her and the room. She flicks on a light and, smiling beguilingly, pulls her turquoise top over her head, exposing a lacy white bra.

She motions me to follow her and I barely have time to slip out of my heels. I pull my shirt up and over my head and let it slip to the floor beside hers. My eyes caress her as she slips out of the rest of her clothes and lies down on the bed. She presents herself to me like a beautiful doll to play with and explore. I finish removing my own clothing and sink down beside her.

I kiss the hollow of her throat, the skin above her heart and down to her stomach. On her stomach, there is a long white scar from her belly button to the edge of her pubic region. I kiss it gingerly, feeling as though I am seeing a secret I wasn't meant to pay too much attention to. I sink lower with my kisses until I am completely distracted by the overwhelming beauty of her and the smell of her is all I can think of.

We stay like this for most of the night. We fall asleep curled into each other, our fingers entwined, and feeling like puzzle pieces finding their other piece.

I wake up slightly confused. I feel her fingers tangled with mine, I feel her pressed against me, snuggled as close as possible. It feels too right, too perfect. Hence the confusion. I keep reminding myself that I only just met her yesterday and that I'm not allowed to fall in any way, shape or form in love with her.

Except, when she opens her eyes and kisses me, I feel a little of my resolve being swept away by ridiculous emotions.

"Stay with me," she whispers. "don't go."

"I wasn't planning on it." I mutter into her honey-gold hair. She whimpers a little and I look at her. She has a tear running down her cheek and, concerned, I wipe it away. "What's wrong?"

"Nothing. I've just been by myself too long and I can't stand to think about it." She kisses me, touching and caressing until what she said has completely been wiped from my mind.

We spend most of the day in her bed, making love, making believe that we have all the time in the world to be together. When we finally emerge from the bedroom, for sustenance other than each other, I ask a question that has been scratching at the back of my brain.

"How did you get that scar on your stomach, if you don't mind my asking?" I say, as nonchalantly as possible. At first I don't think she heard me, but then she sighs and turns to look at me.

"When I was thirteen I gave birth to a stillborn baby boy. The scar is from the emergency Cesarean section." She looks at me, as if to measure my reaction on internal scale. I am stunned, but do my best not to show it. I think of my sisters at thirteen, or myself at that age. And I can't imagine giving birth to a dead child. I can't find anything to say, so I settle for saying nothing at all.

"Thank you," she says. Turning back toward the toaster, she catches the emerging toast and begins to butter it.

"Why are you thanking me?" I ask, coming up next to her. She turns and looks me in the eyes, her shifting eye color both beguiling and frightening.

"Thank you for not prying further." She kisses me and hands me a piece of toast, before heading back toward the bedroom.

An Asthma Attack

We arrive on this scene to find it in disarray. There seems to be an interesting battle taking place and the whole of the battlefield is a set of heaving lungs. The lungs seem to be in some kind of stand off with the immune system, all weapons aimed and primed for the battle.

Left Lung: Sir, I ask you to kindly holster your weapons. We are of one body, YOUR body. We are a part of this system and it is quite silly of you to be attacking us in this manner.

A Bronchial Tube: *he is clearly contracted and struggling to maintain airflow* I think I may explode, sir. I can't take much more. Where is our back up?

Immune System Sargent 1: I'm very sorry, but I'm afraid you don't have the proper clearance to be a part of this system. I'm going to have to ask you to cease and desist all operation immediately or we will have to resume our attacks.

Right Lung: *into a tiny radio* Where the fuck is our back-up?! We can't take much more and they aren't backing down! Requesting immediate back-up!

There is a loud whistling and wheezing that can be heard throughout the set of lungs, a warning siren trying to contact their back-up.

Immune System Sargent 2: Fuck this, its a trap! FIRE!

The Immune System begins an all out assault upon the lungs and bronchial tubes, which have full constricted, restricting air flow. The wheezing gets louder with every attempted intake of oxygen.

Right Lung: We are running low on O2, Commander. Where is our back-up?!

Voice Over: We're deploying as fast as possible, hold your positions!

Left Lung: Things are starting to look a little hazy, Sir. I'm beginning to feel a little blue-ish.

Voice Over: Maintain your positions! We are all apart of this same body, we can't let them destroy it!

Another Bronchial Tube: Intake valves completely blocked. O2... cannot... be... taken. *He quickly passes out*

Immune System Sargent 1: Keep firing men! Destroy the interlopers!

Immune System Sargent 2: For the love of Body, where the hell is all this haze coming from?

Left Lung: That's because we can't get to our reserves of O2, you idiots! Without it everything looks hazy. You have to hold your fire so we can reopen the conduits!

Immune System Sargent 2: NEVER! ITS A TRAP!

Right Lung: YOU WATCH TOO MUCH FUCKING STAR WARS! For the love of Body, hold your fucking fire!

Just as everything seems lost, the area above the lungs and immune system fills with a soft mist. Steroidal Paratroopers drop in and begin spraying the area. The Immune System retreats and the Bronchial tubes are revived.

Immune System Sargent 2: *clearly high* Why were we fighting again? Everything is too pretty to fight.

Immune System Sargent 1: *quickly losing to the effects of the steroids* I know right? Everything is so... red. Such a pretty red. I wanted to be red once.

Immune System Sargent 2: Dude, those lungs look like water balloons. Did you notice?

Immune System Sargent 1: I think you are drunk, Sargent. They most definitely look like heaving red petals, barely hanging on to the flower stems.

Right Lung: Man, that stuff works fast.

A Steroidal Paratrooper: That's what you wanted right? Fast back-up?

Left Lung: Not complaining. Just in awe of how fast your fast is.

A Steroidal Paratrooper: That should keep them occupied for a while. *the Paratroopers retreat further up leaving the lungs and bronchial tubes to assess and reverse any damage*

Right Lung: Its too bad that this peace can't last.

Left Lung: There is no way to convince them that we are part of them is there?

Right Lung: Unfortunately, no. This immune system is too damaged to realize the truth. We just have to continue maintaining our ground.

Left Lung: In a never-ending civil war. Sounds almost poetic, don't you think?

All of Her: Chapter Seventeen

Chapter Seventeen

I take a shower and throw my hair into a messy French braid. I slip into a sexy pair of underwear, but other than that I don't dress up. I skip the bra, opt for an old "Star Wars" t-shirt and a pair of my comfiest jeans. It won't take much to seduce him. I already have the perfect set-up. We've made out before. I gave him my number. I wonder who else I gave my number to that night? It doesn't matter. This will be easy.

I head to the beach and, for nostalgia's sake, I bring along the glow stick kites. I should ask Clark to come and fly kites with me again. I miss him. I miss Jahan. I miss David and Alice. I can't let myself miss them. I'm supposed to be heartless. Heartless people can't miss someone. Especially since it is their own fault that those people are gone.

When I get to the beach, I feel a delicious shiver crawl down my spine at the memories of the last time I was here. I think fondly of that first one night stand. Well, my only one night stand. As far as I know. Every time I've passed out drunk, I've woken up clothed and alone. Totally beside the point of course. I wonder if I'll ever run into that handsome fellow again.

Adam is easy to spot, besides the fact that he is the only one on the beach. He is gorgeous and trim, wearing a "SpongeBob" t-shirt and board shorts. He is also an Albino African-American man with the most beautiful eyes and long ivory dreadlocks, the tips of which are dyed a dark purple. He smiles at me and waves. He jogs up to me and I can't help but notice how fit he is. He glows in the moonlight, a shining pearl of a man. When he comes closer I can see that he is also quite tall. Standing a whole head higher than myself. How could I have forgotten him?

"Abra?" He asks, though I can tell that he knows its me.

"Adam?" I ask, winking. "Its nice to meet you when I'm not drunk."

He laughs, a deep and rich baritone laugh. He smiles again.

"To be fair, I was a little over the edge myself that night. I'm just glad you agreed to meet up with me."

"My pleasure, of course." We set up the blanket and he helps me bury the kite handles in the sand. After we are settled on the blanket, I pour us some Bailey's into a couple plastic cups. We touch them to each other and say cheers, before taking a healthy swig. I feel the alcohol warming every inch of me, until I feel like I am filled with sunshine. It makes sense in this context; I am the sun and he is the moon. I caress his arm and smile up at him.

I lean against him and we sit quietly for a little while, just watching the kites dancing. I don't really know what to say to him. I'd like to skip the awkward small talk and go directly to what we clearly both want, but I am unsure how to take that step.

"I've never done this before," I admit, looking up into his pale eyes. This isn't entirely true, but he doesn't need to know that.

"I suppose we are supposed to make small talk and call it a first date. Or we could just call it a date where we skip the small talk and go straight into the sex." He smiles at me and then kisses me on the lips. He tastes like the alcohol and something sweeter. I don't stop his hands from roaming. I don't stop him from pulling at my clothes.

He kisses me breathless. I kiss down his ivory neck and help him take off his shirt, revealing gorgeous muscles and creamy skin. I push him back, so that he is lying on the blanket, and I just look at him. He is so captivating. I don't think I've ever met someone as beautiful as he is.

I stop all together and a frustrated moan escapes his lips. I smile, wickedly.

"Don't you want to wait just a little longer?" I say. I realize that things are getting a little too repetitive for my tastes. I can't just hop from bed to bed, or in this case beach spot to beach spot. I need something to switch it up, change the feel of things.

"No," he moans, trying to pull me down on top of him. I oblige and straddle him, but refuse to move, though he tries to move my hips. I smile again and kiss him hard.

"Let's play a game." I say.

"What kind of game?" He asks. He looks aroused and intrigued.

"We don't sleep together tonight, but we do sleep together soon. If we wait until our second date, I promise it will be worth your while. Whatever fantasy you have, I promise to fulfill it on our second date, if you agree that we don't have sex tonight."

He raises one white eyebrow and looks at me quizzically.

"Any fantasy?" He asks, skeptically.

"Any." I say and kiss him again. He moans, but he doesn't try to change my mind.

"So what do you suggest we do tonight then?" He asks. He sits up so that I am in his lap and my legs are wrapped around his waist. He holds me close like this and rests his forehead against mine.

"Be my boyfriend and I'll tell you." I say, winking and kissing his nose. He smiles and kisses my eyes.

"Okay, I'm game. I haven't had a steady girlfriend in a few months."

"Well, lover, let's go back to my place and I'll fix us a late dinner." I kiss him again. And again.

"A very late dinner." he says, glancing at his watch. "What are we going to have?"

"What do you like?" I say.

"Just about anything really. I'm not picky." He has lifted up my shirt and he kisses the place between my breasts. He lightly drags his teeth across my chest and I shiver. I feel him move under me.

"Stop." I say, giggling. "Next time, I promise."

He sighs and we disentangle ourselves. We gather up the blanket, the bottle of Bailey's and the kites. He follows me back to my place in his beat up Ford.

Once we are back at my place I begin to fix us something to eat. I fry up some green tomatoes, some turkey bacon and toast several slices of thick homemade potato bread. Once these things are done I melt some provolone cheese onto the bread and add some crisp romaine lettuce. I haven't made "fancy" BLT's, as I call them, since David moved out. I put a very thin layer of honey mustard on mine and a thin layer of regular mayo on Adam's. With the sandwiches, I serve some sweet potato French fries and a small slice of store bought chocolate pie.

I pour us a couple glasses of coconut milk and set the coffee table in front of the couch. Once everything is laid out, I turn on some music and light a couple small candles. I turn out all the lights and then lead Adam to the coffee table where we sit cross-legged across from each other.

"What do you think?" I ask, after he takes a big bite of his sandwich. He smiles while he chews and nods.

"It delicious." He says, once he has swallowed. "Where did you learn this recipe?"

"I made it up." I say, munching on a sweet potato fry. "My ex was tired of the same old, same old. So I started trying to think of things he'd like."

"And he still left you, knowing you could cook like this?" He looks surprised that anyone would leave me on purpose.

"I'm sure his wife can cook just as well as I can. I don't cook very often anymore though. I usually go out to eat."

"Do you miss him?" He asks, putting his sandwich down and looking at me intently.

"Some days, yes. When I wake up alone in the mornings, or when I am doing something that we used to do. On days like that, I miss him more than I could explain."

He nods and takes another bite of his sandwich. I am glad that he doesn't say anything to comfort me. I've had my fill of empty words of sympathy. He does look at me with a sad understanding in his eyes and, every once in a while, he will reach out and stroke my cheek. We enjoy our dinner and then play a game of Scrabble. He beats me, twice. We wash the dishes together and he wipes soap suds all over my face. We laugh and then slow dance in my dining room to a sad Japanese song.

At the end of our evening together, I thank him for everything and give him a kiss goodbye.

"When can I see you again?" he asks.

"Whenever you want to." I say, smiling. For the first time, its a genuine smile. I haven't felt this good since I was with Clark.

"What about my fantasy?" He says, winking at me.

"What do you want?" I ask, leaning against the wall next to the door.

"You dressed up as Princess Leia and me as Han Solo." He looks pointedly at my t-shirt and then back up at my face.

"Leia as Jabba's slave? Or just regular cinnamon roll hair style Leia?" I say, laughing.

"Jabba's slave. Metal bikinis are so sexy, don't you think?" He winks again, kisses me again and waves as he heads down the stairs to the parking lot. I lean against the doorframe and watch him drive off. He waves out the window of his car at me.

I sigh as I close the door. I keep finding nice, understanding, guys who make me wish I could just settle down with them. Maybe I should start trying to pick up jerks? I ponder this as I slip into some fuzzy pajama bottoms and another old t-shirt. I slip into bed, Snuggles jumping up and then curling up beside me.

As I fall asleep, I try to think of where I can go to find a Princess Leia slave girl outfit.

After work I begin my quest to fulfill Adam's fantasy. The outfit turns out to be less difficult to find than I originally thought. I go to the "Theatrics and Time Trips" store downtown where I am able to find the exact outfit for relatively cheap. All the guys in the store look as though they are about to drool as they watch me go to the dressing room to try it on. I laugh, inwardly, at how many of these guys I could get to sleep with me just by stepping out of the dressing room. They all watch as I go up to purchase the outfit and the cashier can barely stammer out my total.

I don't travel far, however. I go to the "Garden of Eden" adult store, down the street, and purchase a collar and chains to complete the outfit. The only thing left to do is style my hair, which I'll wait to do until I have heard from Adam. If he is a typical man, he will wait three or four days to call me. Savoring the sweet agony of waiting. Or, if he can't stand the waiting he'll call me tonight or tomorrow.

On cue, as I am driving home, he calls me.

"Can I see you tonight?" he asks. I can hear the excitement in his voice.

"But I haven't gotten the outfit yet!" I lie, smiling at myself in the rearview mirror.

"You couldn't find one so that we could meet up later?"

"Well, I suppose I might be able to. What time do you want to meet up?" I enjoy dragging it out a little bit.

"Ten like we did last night, if that works for you."

"I suppose that will be alright." I say, sounding a little put out.

"If that doesn't work I can wait until tomorrow, I suppose. I'm just so excited to see you, girl."

I giggle at the wheedling tone in his voice. I am truly wicked. I would never have made David wait, unless I was sick and sometimes not even then. But I have entered a new world where sex can be used as a weapon and I am the one wielding the proverbial whip.

"Well, if you truly don't care, let's wait until tomorrow. I need time to perfect the hairstyle and find a costume." I can hear him suppressing a moan, but he doesn't argue.

"If you want, I can bring dinner." He says. "I'd hate to make you work too hard."

"That would be lovely. I promise to be the perfect slave girl for you."

We don't talk much longer before I arrive home. I carry in my parcels and go into the bathroom to start on my Leia hairstyle. Once I think I have it, I pop in "Return of the Jedi", my favorite out of the original trilogy, and make some popcorn. I curl up on the sofa and lust after Luke and Leia.

I realize, with excited anticipation, I've never done anything like this before. I never dressed up for David. He could never stand for me to be clothed long enough to have dressed up. Clark never expressed any desire for me to play act, either. As to Jahan, she was new to sex as it was, without adding any extra kink to it. I find that I am just as excited by the prospect as I imagine Adam is.

To ease my excited energy, I do several loads of laundry and clean the apartment. I want everything to be perfect for him. I fix some lemon pepper salmon, a small vanilla mocha tiramisu and an artichoke and spinach salad, which I pack up to be re-heated tomorrow. I download the soundtrack to "Star Wars", the original trilogy, to a CD, and make it easily accessible.

With everything prepared I take a bath in rose water and oatmeal. I give myself a manicure/pedicure and I wear an avocado mask to bed. In the morning I wash my face and fix the little spots where my hair came out of its styling during the night. I have a light breakfast of poached eggs and toast. I go to work, feeling a little silly with my hair in Leia fashion, but it can't be helped. It would take to long to fix it after work.

On my lunch hour I call Adam and we agree to meet at my place around seven. When he mentions bringing dinner I tell him that I've already taken care of it. The only thing I ask of him is to come dressed for the part.

Everything is ready when I get home, except for me. I spritz a little sweet perfume all over my body before changing into the outfit. I warm up dinner, turn on the music and complete a few finishing touches. At seven, I am ready for Adam in every sense of the word. I am so excited I feel as though I will jump out of my skin.

I look at the clock at eight and wonder where the hell he is. This is his fantasy, shouldn't he be on time? Or maybe this is part of the fantasy he didn't share?

At nine, I begin to worry, thinking maybe he has been in some sort of accident. I text him, but receive no reply. I try calling, but only get his voicemail.

At ten, I begin to get angry. He could at least have called and told me something else came up. He could've at least done that much. Unless he was in a really bad accident. My feelings switch between anger and worry for this man I've been dating for three days.

At eleven, I give up and put the food back in the fridge. I turn off the music, change out of my outfit and take down my hair. I clean everything up from when I was warming the food and I put away the chains and costume.

At midnight, I fall asleep on the couch; torn between being furious and worried.

At one, I wake up to knocking on my door. Sleepily, I rub my eyes and stumble to the door. I look through the peephole and see Adam leaning against the door with his head down. I can't tell if he is in costume or not. I almost don't open the door, but I am angry enough to want to confront him. I fling the door open so that he stumbles and almost falls into the apartment. As soon as he falls past me I can smell the alcohol on him.

"Where the hell have you been?" I demand, shutting the door.

"I've been waiting to rescue the fair princess." He says, drunkenly. He stumbles and lands face first on the couch. He is dressed in full Han Solo regalia. I stifle the urge to laugh at him. He makes such a comic picture dressed like that and drunker than Winston Churchill. However, I don't know what he is like drunk and the last thing I want is him becoming violent.

"Adam, we were supposed to meet up at seven! It's one in the morning now. Where have you been?"

"I was out with friends." he says, attempting to lift himself off the couch and failing miserably. I help him sit up. When he is upright I see lipstick all over his shirt and his face. On his neck is a mark like a hickey. I suddenly reach a new level of infuriated.

"I have been waiting for you for six hours to fulfill your fantasy and you were out with another woman?"

"Women." He corrects. The man has balls, I'll give him that. I could kill him. I'm surprised that it actually hurts my feelings that he was off cheating on me.

"And were they worth it?" I ask.

"I tried to get away, Abra, I really did." he says, pitifully. Without warning he bursts into tears and is on the floor clinging to my leg. "I'm so sorry, please forgive me. Don't leave me. I couldn't stand it."

"Get off of me." I say, shaking my leg. "You should've thought about all that before you went out with your 'friends'."

He stands up and kisses me sloppily. I pull away and he grabs my arms, pulling me closer to him. He tries to kiss me again, but I move my head so that he grazes my ear. He starts pulling at my clothes and I slap him. This seems to sober him for a moment and he collapses on the couch and begins to sob in earnest.

"Please, Abra, give me a second chance. I promise, it won't happen again. I promise to be faithful. Please, I don't think I can go on if I'm alone again."

"You made your choice, Adam. It's obvious that you weren't actually interested in pursuing a relationship with me or this so-called fantasy. Did you do this just to humiliate me?"

"No, I swear, that wasn't it at all. I promise that I really wanted it. I still do. Please, just give me a second chance."

"I can't believe you are asking me to give you a second chance when you have just shown your true colors. We've been together three days and you couldn't keep yourself from finding another source of company."

With a jarring motion, he comes to his feet and goes toward the kitchen. I follow him asking what he thinks he is doing. He grabs a knife from the drawer and jerks it across his wrist. With a stifled scream I try to grab the knife from his hands, throwing my body between him and the knife. He tries to push me out of the way and makes another stab at himself. I intercept it and receive a small slice on my hand. When the blood pools up, he drops the knife and falls to his knees. I kneel down with him and tear a strip off of my shirt to wrap around his wrist.

The cut isn't deep and quickly the wound begins to scab. Not taking any chances I cleanse it with rubbing alcohol and triple anti-biotic ointment. I then wrap it up and lead him back into the living room. I have put a band-aid on my own cut and we sit very quietly on the couch, his hands in mine.

"Don't ever do that again." I say, quietly. Even I'm not sure which incident I am talking about, but I'd prefer that none of this happen again. He doesn't say anything, just nods. He rests his head on my shoulder and I hum a lullaby to him. It is now two in the morning and I am physically and mentally exhausted. I stand up and I wince when I see him flinch as though I were going to hit him. I hold out my hand to him and pull him up when he takes it.

We go to my room where I help him out of his ruined Han Solo outfit and into a t-shirt and shorts that David left behind and I couldn't stand to get rid of. I put his clothes into the washer and when I come back he is fast asleep. I crawl into bed next to him and sigh heavily.

This is going to be an interesting relationship, though I am sure interesting isn't the right word for it.

All of Her: Chapter Ten

Chapter Ten

Clark and I have been together for a month today. I doubt that he realizes this, because he is a man. A sweetheart, but a man nonetheless. I ponder this "anniversary" while at work. David and I never celebrated monthly anniversaries. At least, David didn't. I celebrated our monthly anniversaries for the first few years, before finally giving up. I wonder if it makes it an "official" relationship if I celebrate a month of together-ness.

While I ponder this, Jahan comes in. She smiles and sits next to me at the end of the counter. It is a slow day and I haven't even touched the shelves I should be sorting.

"You look so serious." she says. "What are you thinking about?"

"Nothing intelligent, I can tell you that." I smile and grab a book that we've been working on. We have been reading through another book of medieval poetry. What started off as a brief curiosity has turned into a full blown obsession with medieval poetry of various ethnicities. Of course, it may not be the only developing obsession.

I have been spending a lot of time with Jahan, both at school and here at work. I am developing a small crush on her. I wonder, briefly, if the reason for this is because she is so completely hidden from me. I crave an actual glimpse of her face, not just her pretty gray eyes. It is pointless, of course, to even dream of seeing her uncovered.

It isn't just that she is covered, however, that attracts me. She is passionate and so very much alive. She devours the books we read. She brings up the most interesting topics for us to discuss. Her intelligence shines so brightly and I am drawn, like a moth, to that brightness. That is one of the things that drew me to Clark, as well. His obvious intellect and ability to maintain a conversation outside the bedroom.

It doesn't matter anyway. She could never find me attractive in that way. Not that it matters right now because I have Clark. For the time being.

Jahan and I spend a pleasant afternoon reading and discussing poetry.

"I have taken up poetry." she says, taking a sip out of her water bottle.

"Really? What kind of poetry are you writing?"

"Nothing as exquisite as what we've been feasting on. Just some simple poems about dreams and ideas I have. Thoughts about my family and other such topics."

"Will you let me read some of what you've written sometime?" I ask, smiling.

"Some day, maybe." The corners of her eyes crinkle and I can tell that she is smiling too. Her eyes dance and I feel myself wanting to lift her veil and kiss her. I'm not sure that the kiss would be entirely chaste either. I really can't keep having these thoughts. She would be offended and I would lose a friend. I don't have many that I should run headlong into losing them.

She leaves after a little while and I start to close up shop. I am spending the night at Clark's tonight. The school year is almost finished and I will get to spend some time with my Latin lover. He is supposed to meet me here any moment now. I smile when I look up and see him walking my way. He gives me a kiss and I hook my arm through his. We walk around the square of downtown, talking and laughing.

He gives me another kiss under a light spangled tree. This one is a little warmer than the first. I feel it melt into me like alcohol. He takes my hand and we run to his car. We arrive, breathless and laughing like school children. I lean against his car and he kisses me again. Every kiss makes me warmer. It is already too warm without these kinds of kisses.

We fly through the door of his apartment and collapse on the couch. We are laughing, kissing, touching and getting ready to explode into flames. We barely make it to the bedroom before our clothes have vanished and we are a tangled heap on the bed.

After we are done, we lie snuggled up in bed. His fingers trace lazy circles on my skin and goosebumps surface. My head rests on his shoulder and my arm is draped across his chest. This feels so comfortable, so perfect. Could we stay like this forever? I close my eyes and wonder, again, if I could fall in love with him.

"I love you." He whispers. He says it so quietly I think I have misunderstood him. I care about him, but I don't love him. Could I lie and say it back? I can't. I don't have the heart to lie about something so precious as love, so I remain quiet. I feel him tense under my head. He is waiting for a response and I don't have one to give. I snuggle closer to him, holding on tightly. After another beat he relaxes again, but his breath comes out as a melancholic sigh.

We decide to go out for dinner. All of our afternoon love making has made us voracious. We walk to the Hob-Knob cafe, just a few blocks from Clark's apartment. Though we are linked, arm in arm, I don't feel like we have regained the gaiety of earlier. Its my fault, of course. I didn't tell him that I loved him. Caring is such a pale emotion compared to love, why would I try to dress it up as such?

At the cafe, I order a Maine lobster spread on toast. Clark orders apple roasted chicken salad. We eat in relative silence. It is broken every now and then by inquiries regarding the food. Which is delicious. For dessert we split a slice of caramel apple cheesecake. This, too, is eaten in silence.

On the walk back to Clark's, we are not linked. He seems to walk a little ahead of me, in fact. I jog to catch up and grab his hand. He doesn't pull it away, but he doesn't actively hold my hand either. I didn't realize he was going to be this upset. I should've said something in response, but I couldn't lie to him. I care enough not to lie. I want an easy break-up with him. A friendship after the break. Lying would not increase the odds of friendship.

When we get back, he tactfully removes his hand from my grip. We go in and sit on the couch. Neither one of us makes the move to turn on the TV or to get out the board games. In fact we make no effort to do anything. We just sit there.

After a few minutes I can't stand it anymore.

"Is something wrong, Clark?" I turn to face him.

"No. I'm fine."

"You are lying."

"Why didn't you say 'I love you' back?" He doesn't sound angry. He doesn't even really sound sad, a little confused and maybe a little hurt. However, he looks so sad I can hardly stand it. I can't tell him that I don't love him, but I can't tell him I love him. I have to think of something to say.

"Look, I really care about you. You know that. But we've only been together for a month and I am just getting out of a bad break-up with someone I'd been with for ten years. Don't you think it is a little fast?" I scoot closer to him and take his hand. I squeeze it, gently, and try to smile reassuringly. I smile as if I will fall in love with him and we will be together forever. My smile is a lie, a sweet trap for him to fall into.

He is quiet, letting my words sink in. He smiles then. His smile pleads for indulgence and he kisses me. I continue to pretend that everything will be fine and kiss him back. Even the kiss is a lie. I feel guilty for leading him in this direction, but I can't stand the thought of him knowing that I'll never love him the way he wants me to.

He gets up and turns on some music. He takes my hand, pulls me up off of the couch and into his arms. We dance around his living room, just slow dancing. I listen to the lyrics. I know he didn't mean to, but he picked a song that is really speaking to me. He softly sings along in my ear. There is an ache in my heart when he sings, his hand on my hip and his other hand in mine.

Have I sold all of my dreams? What happens if the rain comes to wash me and I still don't know who I am when it is gone? I rest my head on his chest and move my feet in time with his. We dance until the sunlight filtering through the curtains has melted away into soft shadows. We don't talk, only swaying back and forth to the soft lilt of music. The disc comes to an end and we stop.

I look up at him, a trickle of moonlight, coming from below the curtain, pools around our feet. He smiles. It is not as warm as earlier, not as happy. He seems diminished somehow. I want to change that. If I could go back to earlier, I would've lied and just said those three words back. What power do they hold over me now? Every "I love you" David ever said was a lie. Why shouldn't I follow suit? I can't stand to think about any of it anymore. I decide that we should do something random. Maybe I can cheer Clark up in the process.

"Clark, let's go fly kites! The weather is perfect for it." I say, enthusiastically. He looks stunned for a moment and then smiles.

"Its dark outside though." He says, gesturing toward the windows.

"We could get glow sticks and attach them to the kites. That way we can see them. It will be fun! We could pack up a little picnic dinner and drive down to the beach."

He smiles again and I tug on his hand, pulling towards the door. While he looks for his sandals, I grab a sheet and make a few hasty sandwiches. Sandals on, he grabs the sheet, and my hand, and we head out the door.

We stop at the store for glow sticks, drinks and, obviously, kites. At the beach we break our glow sticks and attach them to the kites. I run up and down with the glowing kites until they drift upward. I giggle with joy, like a little kid, watching the kites and glow sticks dance in the breeze. For the first time, in a long while, I feel content and happy.

I feel like nothing can spoil this moment. The moon is shining brightly, I have glowing kites dancing above the water and a sweet guy to eat a picnic dinner with. I don't think I would've ever done this before. There are many things I have never done because David wouldn't have liked it.

We bury the handles deep in the sand so that we can eat our sandwiches. It is fun to watch them careen across the moonlit sky.

"We should do this again, sometime. Except make our own kites. Maybe we could make the frames out of glow sticks or the glow stick bracelets!" I say, dreamily munching on my sandwich.

Clark smiles and nods, his eyes following the flow of the kites.

"When you graduate, and I am done teaching for the summer, we can do this every night if you like."

"I'd like that." I say, smiling at him. I give him a kiss and then lean back on my elbows to watch our kites.

We sit in peaceful silence for a while, just watching the kites drift on the wind. I think about all the different kites I want to make and how much fun it would be to do something like this more often. I try to stop it, but a wish bubbles up into my daydreaming. A wish that David and I could be doing this together.

The wind dies down and our kites begin to falter. We unearth the handles and quickly reel them in before they are lost to the water. We try to get them going again, running up and down the beach like crazy people, laughing like lunatics. When they refuse to go up again we give up and pack everything back into the car.

Once we arrive back at Clark's, he kisses me. A lingering kiss. A hinting kiss. I smile and we grab everything and carry it up to his place. He kisses me again, once everything is put away and then pushes a stray wisp of hair back behind my ear.

"Thank you for a wonderful night, Abra." He says, kissing my cheek and then trailing kisses down my neck. Before I can say anything his mouth is on mine and that is the only response he needs.

The next morning, I am just lying in bed. Clark has already gotten up and is in the kitchen, cooking I believe.

I can't stop thinking. My thoughts are all jumbled and mixed up. I'm so confused. I can't help hating myself for being so blind for so long. I can't help but hate Alice and David for leading me on and breaking my heart. I want to stop remembering all of the signs and finally understanding what they meant. I want to let myself care more about Clark, maybe build a relationship to be proud of.

I can't. I just can't fall in love with him. I can't trust him. He is the enemy in this scenario. He is the heart-breaker here, the vice that I can't escape from. He isn't David. He isn't the enemy, but I can't make myself believe that. Sometimes, when we are having sex I will see David's face, looming over me. He isn't there. Only Clark is there. Clark. The man who slows down and comes to a stop when he sees the panic in my face. The man who forgets about getting what he wants and will just hold me when I start to shake uncontrollably, crying again.

In my dictionary of love affairs, Clark will be the definition of a "perfect boyfriend." He will be a shining example of what men should be like, but I can't fall in love with him. I can't reconcile my feelings for, and about, David to what I feel about Clark. I have to maintain control over my emotions.

I need to get out of this before I get too into it. I'm already too far. I'm playing with fire and not only am I about to be burned, but someone who doesn't deserve it is about to be burned as well.

I ask myself the important questions.

If Clark was in a terrible bear wrestling accident and lost most of his face and his ability to... well, you know... could I stay with him?

If I was pregnant with an alien love child would he cry when it exploded my heart?

If I we were going to a ocean colors party and I wore blue, but he refused to wear green what would I do?

Okay, those questions are silly and I'm trying to be serious. I honestly can't think of a reason to break up with him. He is perfect. He cooks, he flies kites with me at night, he cares about me. I don't love him, but is that reason enough to leave him? Could I learn to love him? Could I let go of all this hatred that is burning me up? I don't like asking myself these questions so I switch back to silly ones.

I need coffee. I need to break up with Clark, before I become too attached. I need a new boyfriend and/or a new course of action. I need a new life.

My cell phone begins to chirp. The caller ID says Noah. I let it go to voicemail. He'll be mad that I'm not answering. Oh well.

Clark comes in with a plate of steaming waffles and a cold glass of dark chocolate almond milk on a tray.

"Good morning, beautiful. Breakfast?" He sets the tray down next to the bed and slides in next to me. I summon a smile and we eat.

"What are you thinking about?" He asks.

"Whether there are angels on the moon. You?" I take another bite of homemade waffle, followed by a swig of almond milk.

"A beautiful woman." He says.

"What lucky woman?" I ask.

"You." He leans over and nibbles my ear sending a shiver through me.

I smile and take another bite of waffle. He takes a drink of his almond milk and winks at me. I try to stifle a guffaw, but can't help it. We end up laughing through the rest of breakfast.

Once we are done eating, I help him do the dishes and get dressed for another day. I head to the book store and he heads to the school to post some final grades. He gives me a goodbye kiss and off I go.

As I am trying, unsuccessfully, to unlock the door of "Wilde: Rare and Used Books", my phone begins to chirp again.

"Hello?" I say, tucking the phone in-between my face and my shoulder whilst attempting to open the door.

"Hey, what are you doing today?" I am caught a little off guard, I thought it was Noah. Instead it is my sister, Anna.

"Nothing much, work. You?" I finally get the door to open and manage to grab the phone before I drop it.

"I was wondering if you'd be willing to watch the kids this next week. Greg wants to take me out on a movie date. Em and Sophie have finals this week and Mom is finishing up her art class at the college. And Kevin has a date, apparently. Help, Abra Kenobi, you're my only hope."

I laugh, flipping on the lights through out the store. I don't know which is funnier. Kevin having a date or being called "Abra Kenobi."

"I suppose I could help you out. Its just going to be so rough having to watch the kids, Ann. I mean, after all they are related to you."

"Ha ha, very funny. You know you love watching my kids. Especially so I can go and have some alone time with my husband. I might even be persuaded to scoot a little green your way, if that helps."

"You don't have to pay me, I don't mind. Just don't expect me to clean or anything like that and we'll be good."

"Deal!" My poor sister, I give her such a rough time.

"So, Kevin has a date, huh?" I set my bag on the floor and begin to count the cash register drawer.

"Apparently so. He met some girl at the Wilford and Brimley. He wouldn't give me details, but insisted that he was completely booked all next week."

"Wow, one date books up the whole week. Must be a very interesting girl." I laugh, but experience a little guilt for it. I feel a little sorry for my brother. He hasn't had a date in a year. Not that he generally has time to date anyway. He is always working or at Mom's helping Brad with upkeep. I shouldn't tease him, especially when he isn't here to defend himself. But what else are little sisters for?

"He hasn't had time to date, you know. Between work and... well, work. I don't mind, but I still need some time to just be with my hubby. Are you sure you don't mind?"

"It'll be fine. The kids and I will have a grand ol' time. So grand they'll have completely forgotten about you before you even leave."

"How nice. Well, I guess I'll let you get back to work. Call me later so that we can talk more about which day works best for you and what time. I really appreciate it."

"No problem. Talk to you later, love you."

"Love you too, sis." With that, my sister hangs up and I realize I am still standing in front of the cash register with un-counted money in my hands.

Once all the money is accounted for, I begin to dust. As I dust, I pick out books I am planning on reading today and I lay them on the counter. The bell on the door jingles as a customer comes in.

"Good morning, welcome to 'The Wilde'." I say, not really looking up.

"Good morning, Abe." I look up to see Noah. He is smiling, his eyes twinkling over his John Lennon glasses. His hair is rakishly styled and there is a glow about him.

"Hello, what are you doing here?" I ask, going to hug him.

"You didn't answer your phone so I thought I would stop in. Still hanging out with Oscar, James and Edgar, I see." He glances over my book choices resting on the counter.

"I never quite leave their company, do I?" I smile and pull up a chair for him. "May I offer you some tea? I have Sencha Kyoto Cherry Rose Festival, Lapsong Souchong, Earl Grey, Sevenberry Sangria Rooibos and Strawberry Misaki Blooming."

"Some Earl Grey would be nice." He says. I set a kettle of water on a little stove situated several feet from the counter. The idea of serving tea had been my idea. Luckily for me, my boss, Mrs. Hafstead, approved and had a small stove top situated behind the counter.

"Any other reason for coming to visit?" I ask, retrieving cups and saucers from under the counter.

"No. I was thinking about you and thought I would visit. Maybe see if you wanted to go get some coffee later."

"Why not?" I say. "Sounds like fun to me. We can go on my lunch break, if you like."

"Sounds fine to me."

The kettle whistles and I pour it into our cups, over our tea-bags. We sit in happy silence, steeping our tea and listening to the soft classical music drifting through the, otherwise, empty store.

Cello Wars (Or how I learned to love the accordion)

The other night I was really in the mood for cello music. Which happens frequently, actually. I love the cello. It is one of my favorite instruments. The others also being stringed instruments. But that is for a different blog.

I didn't come across the following music video first. I saw it after listening to another video from the same channel. The Piano Guys are pretty amazing, what can I say?

So, for your enjoyment, nerdiness and what-not: Cello Wars: The Phantom Cellist.

- Finally get into college!
- Get a new car
- Move (again)

- Enjoy life.

New and Improved Reading Goals
All things considered, I actually did really well with my resolution to read more last year. I made it all the way to October before I completely gave up for no apparent reason. The reasoning was actually I was super busy and spaced it mostly. Though I did try to read. However, as Yoda says "Do or do not, there is no try."

Dancing in My Chair

Sometimes, at random moments, I will passionately miss the 90's. As in the decade, the 1990's. Seriously, I don't know why. The 90's had some horrible fashion trends and some less than good music, but it was my childhood and I embrace that.

Its at these moments that I go back to the music I listened to, or discovered in the 90's. Or I watch some clips from my favorite shows. Or I sit and just dance in my chair to the music I loved (when I could listen to it that is, a certain man [who shall remain nameless] forbade the listening of certain music that wasn't Christian). I listen to 90's pop, Christian music, Michael Jackson, Celine Dion and Whitney Houston. I think about Doug, the Rugrats, All That, Wishbone, Are You Afraid of the Dark and Cousin Skeeter. I read excerpts from "Saddle Club", "The Boxcar Children" and "Goosebumps" (which I didn't read until I was in my late teens).

And sometimes, because I'm rediscovering my childhood, I discover new music and I fall in love with a decade when everything seemed so much more simple! At least to me. Do you remember when Britney was at the top of her game? Songs like "Lucky" and "Oops I did it Again"? Or "Big Butts"? We were the Nintendo players, the Mariah Carey lovers, the believers of Aliens and Y2K. We wore high tops and had crew cut hair. We were insane and believed in so much, hoped for so much.

I miss those times. I really do. I don't know why, because the 90's had its downsides too. Like any decade. Like any day. Like any life. But the 90's was my childhood. When I went swimming with my Aunt Carmen all summer. Or cleaned house with my Aunt Peggy, who would let me spend the night and watch Mork & Mindy in between homeschooling lessons.

I miss getting cappuccino for the first time and discovering how delicious it was. I miss running through the woods and pretending it was Narnia. I miss discovering "The Yellow Submarine" with my brother and all the movies my mom introduced us to. I miss falling asleep to Simon & Garfunkel at night and dancing with Hannah to Loggins & Messina. The 90's was my playground, my perfect time. My biggest worries were the boys I was crushing on and Y2K (which everyone was afraid of).

For New Year's Chris and I would stay up until midnight watching "Much Ado About Nothing" and "Henry V" with our family friend, Ivan, while eating pizza and teasing Ivan when he would cover his eyes during the bloody parts. We went to the Egyptian exhibit at the Children's Museum and rode our bikes up and down the gravel roads.

My mother taught me to read, inspired me to write, inspired a love of literature and writing, of exploring everything. She taught me that every moment is a learning moment.

I played with Hannah, my baby sister. She looked like Shirley Temple at 2. I took her outside and chased her all over the yard. At night she would kick me out of bed, even though she was 2 and I was 10. As a baby, I would feed her cheerios in her bouncy seat and sing her Simon & Garfunkel songs as lullabies. I would read books about Sacajawea and Sesame Street. She was my first experience with a baby (when I would've been old enough to understand it). And, in a way, she was my baby. I protected her, I dressed her up, I changed her diapers and fed her. I played dolls with her. And I failed her in many ways. And, in many ways, she is still my baby, even though she is 15 now.

Chris and I would race our bikes, try stupid stunts (like tying Chris to the back of my bike to help him run faster and "lose weight") and chopping wood. We chopped a lot of wood, fed and watered a lot of dogs. I forced him to play Barbie dolls with me and he drove me up a wall. We dressed up, we fought, we forgave each other and he is one of my best friends to this day.

I met my best friend, Sarah W., a friendship that has lasted us 13 years this year. We used to talk on the phone for hours and hours. We watched "Pocahontas" over the phone, because we didn't get to hang out in real life as often as we wished. We played Gordon Lightfoot as loud as possible and scream-sang along. We picked berries and ate them all, while sitting in a field of green and white. We played Legos and made up stories. We ran wild, wrote notes in our own secret language during church. She helped me fall in love with snakes. I helped her fall in love with Star Wars.

I believed in Jesus with all my heart. Believed there was some reason for all the pain, for all hard times. For all the deaths and the lies. The 1990's were beautiful to me, even though I had a step-father who abused my brother and my mother almost died on our bathroom floor. Even though I was sexually abused. Even though my grandparents died. Even though it was the last time I saw my father in person. The last I spoke to him on the phone. The last letter I received. I believed that a good and just God was going to make it all right. That He was polishing me like how a gem is polished with stones.

I wanted to be a doctor. I wanted to deliver babies in China, stop the abortions from happening. Protect the innocent. I wanted to be an actress and star in the movies I had seen. I wanted to be a writer. I wanted to be a civil rights activist. I wanted to be free. Dream my dreams, live my life. I wanted to be married and have 16 children that I would home-school. I wanted to be a missionary. I wanted to be loved.

Do any of those childhood dreams still hold sway? Can they still exist now that I'm older, wiser, and I know all that I know?

For your viewing pleasure, a song from the 1990's that I used to dance to, alone in my room.

That's right, "Livin' La Vida Loca" by Ricky Martin. And yes, I am that dorky.

The Clown in My Closet

THIS BLOG IS DEDICATED TO MEGAN M! (who kind of demanded that I have a blog at least dedicated to her. :P )

Coulrophobia is the extreme fear of clowns.

I was thinking about clowns the other day. (Today I was thinking about abortions and fruit, but that is a different blog for [perhaps] a different day) And I asked my friends on Facebook (yay, Facebook addiction) who was afraid of clowns. 8 of my friend responded.

Three of my friends were scared of them.
Two of my friends weren't.
And three friends said that they just couldn't stand them, but weren't actually afraid of them.

Why are we (as a society) afraid of clowns? Is it because of Stephen King? Is it urban legends? Is it people like John Wayne Gacy? Is it a fear of the unknown and a fear of the masked? Donnie says that clowns fall into the realm of the uncanny. Which is why those who haven't seen "It", encountered John Wayne Gacy or urban legends still don't like them. Even if they have no real reason to dislike them.

I have personally never had a problem with clowns (except for when I was a year old and my parents got me a clown for my first birthday. I wasn't entirely sure what to think of that). In fact, I really like the ideas of clowns. I especially like older versions of them, such as harlequins and jesters. I like French clowns and mimes, too. There is something oddly beautiful, to me, about clowns. Certain clowns that is. Obviously there are clowns out there that are just plain horrifying and disturbing.

Here are some examples of what I call, beautiful clowns.

Okay, this one is kind of just because I think Keira Knightley is hot and she looks good with the "fuck me" red hair. :P Also, she is too pretty to be an "evil" clown, even if that is what her make-up implies.

This one actually has hardly anything to do with clowns. This one is more because I love mermaids and this is a clown fish mermaid... Hey, clown is in the name!

And just for the cute factor, a whole class full of clowns. ^_^

I suppose I can understand being afraid of something that you can't see its real face. That is slightly unnerving (unless you're into that kind of thing), but I don't find it frightening. If a clown was following me at night, I would be nervous, but I'd be nervous with anyone following me at night. I'm the type of person who is constantly keeping track of the vehicle behind me when I'm driving. I always plan ahead in case they ARE following me and I need to take a different route (because you NEVER EVER go to your house if you suspect someone of following you, you find a safe place to go).

I read in an article that one of the reasons people are afraid of clowns is because of Batman. In the Batman comics his arch-nemesis is the Joker (and his sexy sidekick, Harley Quinn). The Joker is a bat-shit insane man who always looks like a deranged clown. Heath Ledger (may he rest in peace) really brings that creepy clown vibe to the forefront in "The Dark Knight". Personally, The Joker was my favorite male villian in Batman (Batman being my all time favorite superhero, but once again that is another blog for another day), my favorite female villian being Catwoman.

When I was young (and stupid) I had a terrible crush on the Joker, partially because he was brilliantly insane and insanely brilliant. He was witty and often terrifying and he totally owned a piece of my heart because of it. I don't see why the Joker would make people afraid of clowns. Are you seriously going to believe that every clown, everywhere, is a Joker in disguise waiting to kill you or fuck with your head?

The Joker and his many faces (fun fact: Mark Hamill [aka: Luke Skywalker in Star Wars] voiced the cartoon Joker).

Anyway, I guess what I'm really trying to say is...

This is a Black footed Ferret. And they are almost extinct. They are the only ferrets native to the United States and are rapidly decreasing. They were actually thought extinct until one day a shepherd dog brought one to its owner.
