..They couldn't catch a guy with a bomb in his shorts on a flight bound for Detroit on Christmas Day, but they are absolute hell on a poor disabled child with leg braces. The Transportation Safety Administration refused to allow a four year old disabled boy to pass through airport security without first taking off his leg braces. A Philadelphia Enquirer Columnist reports how screeners at the Philadelphia Airport made this insane request of a child making his first flight to Disney World last March. The four year old, born prematurely, has malformed ankles and low muscle tone in his legs, and was just beginning to walk at the time the incident occurred. His parents told airport screeners that their son could not walk without the braces, which were made of metal and plastic. But that didn't matter to the screener, who insisted that the child had to physically walk across the security checkpoint on his own. When the father, who is a New Jersey police officer, asked to see a supervisor, and told him that his 4 year old son clearly was not a terrorist, he says the supervisor told him quote "You know why we are doing this, don't you?" Well the TSA now says that the boy should have never been required to remove his leg braces. They say, the parents should have been told to take their son to the private screening area, and the TSA has profusely apologized to the family.
With all the training these screeners go through, maybe they could include a few classes in common sense and sensitivity, you think.
So here's my question to you all...
Is the TSA going to far when it makes a four year old disabled boy remove his leg braces to pass through a security checkpoint?
